| Kutztown Fire & Rescue is working to improve fire protection in our rural areas by installing dry hydrants. A dry hydrant is a non-pressurized pipe system installed in a pond, lake, or other permanent water source. It lets our fire engines quickly draft large amounts of water right from the property during an emergency — no tanker shuttle needed. The system stays empty when not in use (so it doesn’t freeze) and includes a screened intake underwater and a standard fire-department connection at the roadside. We’re seeking homeowners in Greenwich and Maxatawny Townships who have a suitable pond or water source and are willing to grant a small easement so we can install a dry hydrant on their property. We are applying for a DCNR grant to cover the cost of the equipment and installation. Any dry hydrant installations would be contingent on grant approval. The homeowner’s main contribution is simply allowing the installation and granting the necessary access easement.
Why it matters: • Faster, more reliable water supply for fires in our rural neighborhoods • Helps protect your home, your neighbors’ homes, and the wider community • Can improve the local ISO fire-protection rating, which often leads to lower homeowners insurance premiums for properties within about 1,000 feet of a certified dry hydrant
